Mesothelioma: Everything You Need to Know
Mesothelioma is a rare but aggressive cancer arising from the mesothelium – the thin layer of tissue lining internal organs. It most often develops in the pleura (lining of the lungs) but can also occur in the peritoneum (abdominal lining), pericardium (heart sac), or tunica vaginalis (testicular lining). This malignancy is strongly linked to asbestos exposure, which causes DNA damage and chronic inflammation in mesothelial cells.
Affected Organs: Depending on the site, mesothelioma is classified as:
Pleural mesothelioma: affecting the lung linings (about 65–70% of cases).
Peritoneal mesothelioma: affecting the abdominal lining (≈30% of cases).
Pericardial mesothelioma: around the heart (1–2%).
Tunica vaginalis mesothelioma: around the testes (extremely rare, <1%).
